Leadership: Ask Not for Your Load to Be Lightened, But for Your Shoulders to Be Stronger

Growing up as the oldest of four siblings, Angela Davis, fitness expert and professional athlete, had to assume a leadership role in her own home from an early age. Her family was close, going to church together every Sunday and always working together as a family unit as they grew up and evolved.

Leadership means to be the head of or to direct. As Angela motivates you in this workout, as a part of her 21 Days of Motivation and Movement series, she shares a view of leadership that shifts the common perspective. She says that "True leaders don't ask for their load to be light, they ask for their shoulders to be stronger." We have all been called on and created to be leaders, and it is our job to remain strong so that we can flourish in that role.

Our journey is not just about us, but rather it exists in great relation to everyone else around us. Our ability to encourage others to be the best version of themselves exemplifies true leadership. When Angela accepted the opportunity to be a part of Oprah's The Life You Want Weekend, she faced the challenge of leading thousands of people in an arena toward change. While a tall task, Angela demonstrated passion, hope, forgiveness and a dedication to making the world a better place—that is true leadership.

For the movement today, you are asked to do a STATIONARY LUNGE WITH GOAL POST ARMS. As you move with leadership, remember that it is not about your load being lighter, but rather about having strong shoulders so you can lift those around you higher. Keep your core tight and focus on strengthening your shoulders while focusing on your breath. You will do 30 seconds on one side, and 30 seconds on the other. The workout begins when the clock starts.
