From the time she was a young girl growing up in Texas, Cynthia Bond loved words. She hadn't originally intended to be a writer, but after moving to Los Angeles as an adult, Cynthia found herself in a writing class, where the seed for her debut novel,
Ruby, was planted.
It took more than 10 years for Cynthia Bond to complete that manuscript, and in 2014 her efforts came to fruition when the book was published to critical acclaim. It has since been selected for
Oprah's Book Club 2.0, and as Cynthia tells Oprah, there was one main reason she didn't give up writing the book.
"So often when I was working on this, when I really didn't think I would be able to complete it, I thought, 'Maybe there's a woman out there who needs to hear this
story, and it will help them,'" she says. "And now that's happening."
In the above video, Cynthia opens up about the family support she received on her journey, what she keeps inside her personal writing room and what life lesson has taken her the longest to learn.
