When scientist Jon Kabat-Zinn began meditating as a young man, the practice was considered the product of '60s counterculture. Today, the practice has gone mainstream, with Jon as a pioneer in the field of integrating both mindfulness and yoga with modern medicine. Jon's approach to health and healing has helped countless patients struggling with chronic illness and pain, but practicing mindfulness isn't just for those who are suffering.
As a part of his own morning ritual, Jon uses an effective combination of mindfulness, yoga and meditation to help himself feel truly awake throughout the day. "I have a routine that I've developed over the past 50 years that's just like what I like to do, and I do that mindfully," he says. "It's mindful yoga. ... Then, I drop into sitting—and I usually sit cross-legged on the floor, but you can sit in a chair—and I just kind of drop into the body."
Watch as Jon details more of his ritual, discusses how he "drops in" on himself throughout the day and describes the incredible transformation that can occur when you go about your life in mindfulness.
