The Peetes survived another major milestone: packing daughter Ryan off to college all the way across the country at New York University. The big move proved to be a learning experience for Holly. "When we got to NYU, I was surprised at how few things we had," she says. "Other people had just trucks and trucks of stuff, and I think we underpacked."

Here, Holly lists the essential items that should be on your packing list—and what should be left behind. She also imparts some helpful advice for making your child's college move-in day experience as painless as possible.
