Scenes from Country Walkers' Walking Food Tour of Italy
This contest is now closed.
Following ancient mule paths you walk to the tip of the Sorrentine peninsula with incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Isle of Capri in the distance.
During your walk, you'll encounter sun-washed landscapes, the Bay of Naples, and historic landmarks. You'll pass grazing sheep and goats, bushes of heather, rosemary, and rockrose, and a forest of oak and chestnut trees.
After one hike, you'll arrive in the hillside town of Montepertuso for a well-deserved lunch of local cheese, cold cuts, and grilled vegetables at a family-run restaurant. The country restaurant is part of the Slow Food Movement, an international association promoting food and wine culture, while also protecting local food and agricultural biodiversity worldwide.
Also included in the trip is a two-hour guided walking and historical tour of the archaeological site of Pompeii, which provides a glimpse of life in AD 79—the year Mount Vesuvius buried the town.
A scenic ferry ride will take you from Sorrento to the Isle of Capri, where you'll explore the famed Faraglioni rock formations (the "teeth" of Capri), the Arco Naturale, the Anacapri (with its 800 Phoenician Steps), and the ruins of Villa Jovis (built by Emperor Tiberius 2,000 years ago).
You'll also spend time in the picturesque hilltop village of Ravello, and see its 11th-century Duomo up close. Ravello has enchanted writers, artists, musicians, and travelers for centuries—Wagner, D.H. Lawrence, and Virginia Woolf all spent time here. Its cobblestone streets are free of traffic and bordered by gardens and villas, including the 13th-century Villa Rufolo, famous for its gardens.
When it comes to exploring the legendary coast of Amalfi, the best way to see it is on foot. Together with expert local guides, you will walk along coastal trails and encounter sun-washed landscapes, Mediterranean vistas and historic landmarks.
