Phylicia Rashad: I Don't Feel I've Ever Been Married

Although the marriage of Clair and Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show was a model of the perfect union for many TV viewers, the actress who played Clair, Phylicia Rashad, had great struggles with her off-air relationships.

On Oprah: Where Are They Now?, Phylicia begins by praising her TV marriage, "I think that that show really gave new light to married life, and relationship between husband and wife and surviving children together. I always felt that one of the reason Clair was held in such esteem by audiences was that she was held in such esteem by her husband."

She goes on to encourage others to get married, while striking a less optimistic cord about her personal experiences with matrimony. "People should marry so that they can build a life together," Phylicia says. "I've been married three times, but I don't feel that I've ever been married once. It's like, 'Okay, then, stop.'"
