Why Montell Jordan Chose Marriage over the Music Industry

Aired on 02/11/2017 | CC tv-pg
Making music was "the best and worst time" of R&B singer Montell Jordan life.

The music artist, best known for the earworm "This Is How We Do It," tells Oprah: Where Are They Now? that his years in the industry were the "best time basically because I was able to create music that becomes the soundtrack to people's lives, but some of the worst times of my life simply because of being away from home, and I'm experiencing the temptations of being away."

Montell has been married to his wife, Kristin, for 22 years, and they have four children together. When he was at peak fame, his record label told him no one wants a "tall, handsome, unavailable R&B singer." They decided his wife, also his manager, would keep her maiden name. Infidelity issues arose, and Montell had to make a choice between his wife and his music.

Here, he opens up about his relationship to an industry that he now calls "abusive."
