Meredith Baxter on Coming Out: "I Felt Unburdened"

In 2009, after more than 40 years of acting, three failed marriages and five children, Meredith Baxter, the beloved mother on Family Ties, came out as a lesbian on national television.

Two years later, Meredith opened up to Oprah about her sexuality and the painful secret she hid while filming Family Ties—she was a victim of domestic abuse. Meredith alleges that her ex-husband, David Birney, was an abusive and controlling man, though David has repeatedly denied these claims.

Now, five years after dropping these bombshells, Meredith invites cameras into the home she shares with her wife, Nancy, whom she married in December 2013.

"After coming out on national television, I felt unburdened and that's the way I feel now," she says. "I don't have anything I'm trying to hide."
