Exclusive: What Helped Lionel Richie Pull Through in His Darkest Hour

Around the same time Lionel Richie's father became ill, the legendary songwriter was also going through a divorce and a potential career-ending throat surgery. In his darkest hours, Lionel says, a friend told him he was sending over some inspirational tapes that would help him get through his crisis. The tapes Lionel received were his own albums, with specific songs like "Zoom," "Just to Be Close to You" and "Still" highlighted. Though Lionel had written those songs, he says he never really heard them until that moment.
