Savoring Every Sunday
But then comes Sunday. All the stops are pulled out. My Wellies have been replaced by my high-heels—and I've still managed to walk the 100 yards down the church aisle without falling over or breaking an ankle. I know I'm starting to sound really superficial, but you girly-girls know what I mean! It's not all about the designer labels, but about feeling confident.
Of course, that's just one of the many reasons I love Sundays. As a family of knitters, we got to put down our needles on Sunday, as it was traditionally a much-deserved day of rest after a busy week at work or school. It was, of course, a day devoted to the worship of God in Christian tradition, and it was also a day to catch up with friends.
Sunday was also a day of indulgence, where the porridge was cast aside for a more decadent "fry up." Everything we ate was fried: the eggs, bacon, sausages, black pudding...even the bread was fried in butter! Occasionally, we made French toast, which was fried in loads of butter and served smothered in golden syrup.
You may be asking, "What's a breakfast without pancakes and bacon?" Well, after many years as a vegetarian, I finally caved in at my friend Aricia's house. She would make the healthiest, most delicious pancakes, smothered in a mixture of fresh berries and real maple syrup, always accompanied by a big pan full of crispy, organic, nitrate-free bacon. How could I resist when even Marmalade the cat was meowing for her piece of the action?
