In September 2005, Oprah promised families displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita new homes and a new community. As of August 2007, donations to Oprah's Angel Network in response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita total $15.6 million. Over the past two years, nearly 300 homes have been built or restored in eight communities across four states—Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.
