Fine lines and wrinkles don't happen out of the blue. Our skin changes every day, aging gradually. It makes good sense to change your skincare regimen along with it. Although makeup artist Laura Mercier stresses that everyone has unique skincare issues, she also suggests some general guidelines for adjusting facial skincare through the decades of your life.

The 20s
"Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse, morning and night," Laura says. After cleansing in the morning, apply an oil-free moisturizer with SPF to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun and to prevent future wrinkles. Because young skin may have plenty of natural oils, women in their 20s may not need to moisturize any more than once a day. If you have oily skin, remember to smooth an alcohol-free toner over your face after cleansing and before applying your facial moisturizer. Also, choose non-comedogenic facial products because they don't clog pores.

The 30s
Step up your moisturizer use to twice a day, morning and night. "[As in your 20s], be sure to use an oil-free moisturizer with SPF protection from the sun," suggests Laura. "Also, if you find a skincare product, such as a foundation that contains caffeine to help lift and firm your skin a bit, then go for it as long as it isn't harmful to you." The choice to use skin-firming products is an individual one, however. They aren't for everyone, she says.

The 40s, 50s and 60s
"Consider using a vitamin-packed facial serum to brighten and revive your skin," recommends Laura. "After you cleanse, smooth it all over your face. It can help boost collagen levels, firm your skin and give your face a healthy glow."
