Soap Star Kristina Wagner: Divorce Made Me a Better Mother

Season 5 Episode 520

In the 1980s, the supercouple was a major element of virtually every soap opera. General Hospital's Luke and Laura, in particular, were beloved by viewers. When the duo left the show in 1984, the producers were looking for the next big pairing.

Meet Frisco Jones and Felicia Cummings. They had a grip on viewer's imaginations for a better part of the '80s. It may have helped that the on-screen newlyweds, played by Jack and Kristina Wagner, had legitimate chemistry behind-the-scenes, as well. "Being thrown together on set in a romantic way, I think it was inevitable," Kristina tells Oprah: Where Are They Now? "I don't know how you could avoid it."

In 1990, Kristina and Jack made their relationship public when Kristina became pregnant with their first child, Peter, and in 1993, they got married at a private wedding chapel in Lake Tahoe. Though they welcomed their second son, Harrison, in 1995, Kristina and Jack's 13-year marriage was plagued with problems. They got a divorce in 2006.

The divorce, Kristina says, led to an awakening. "I realized that I really needed to figure out what was going on with me in order to move forward," Kristina says. "It's easy to lose yourself when you're only in your young 20s and you're just doing what's expected of you and not really thinking about your own needs."

Additionally, she says, the divorce made her a better mother. "The divorce was the best thing that could have happened to me and for my children, as well, because I don't think I was being a very good mother at the time."

"I had to deal with myself first because we ultimately have to take care of ourselves before we can help others, right?"
