Rick Springfield's Embarrassing "Do You Know Who I Am?" Moment

Season 5
CC | tv-14
When Oprah first met Rick Springfield in 2008, this '80s heartthrob shared the story behind his biggest hit, "Jessie's Girl." Rick revealed that Jessie's girl was, in fact, a real person, but her boyfriend's name was actually Gary. "Gary just somehow didn't sing right," Rick said. "So I changed it to Jessie."

After "Jessie's Girl" catapulted to the top of the music charts, Rick was a household name. Now, more than 30 years later, Rick admits that he once asked a store clerk, "Do you know who I am?"

Rick says the embarrassing incident happened while he was in Las Vegas, preparing for a big concert at the MGM Grand. After buying his son Josh a defective air rifle, Rick tried to return it without a receipt. "I actually said, 'Do you know who I am?' because of my son. I'm, like, failing in front of my son," he says. "I'm going, 'I'm Rick Springfield, dammit.' And instantly felt like an idiot as soon as I did it."
