Jenny Boylan pushed the public understanding of transgender issues to a new level when she discussed her transition on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2003, a moment the former English professor has described as "historic."

Recently, on Oprah: Where Are They Now?, Oprah asked how Jenny's sons were affected by their father's transformation. "I think, in fact, that having a father who became a woman, in some ways, helped my sons become better men," Jenny says. "They have learned to stand up for the underdog. They have learned the importance of being true to yourself, what it means to be brave and to do the hard thing."

Jenny says, while holding back tears, she's proud of how her boys turned out. "They're strong, courageous, but also very gentle, kind young men. I think it shows that with enough love, almost anything is possible."
