After the '80s sitcom Who's the Boss? aired its final episode in 1992, Daniel Pintauro, the young actor who played Jonathan Bowers, graduated from high school and enrolled at Stanford University. In 1997, while he was still an undergraduate, a tabloid newspaper outed him as a gay man.

After moving from California to New York City, Daniel ended a two-year relationship and decided he wanted to be more sexually adventurous. At that point, Daniel says, he began experimenting with drugs. "I was doing crystal meth, which completely ruins your immune system," he says. "Crystal meth takes away your inhibitions. You have no limits."

Although Daniel says he thought he was being safe, he ended up contracting HIV from a man who failed to disclose his positive status. He was diagnosed in March 2003. "I know exactly when it happened," he says. "I truly thought I was being safe, and obviously, I wasn't."

Now, Daniel, 39, reveals the promise he made to himself after receiving his diagnosis.
