Meet the 9/11 Widow Who Sparked National Outrage

Kathy Trant's life changed forever on September 11, 2001. Her husband, Dan, a successful bond trader, was killed in the World Trade Center attack. Kathy, who had devoted her life to taking care of her husband and their three children, expressed her grief in an epic shopping spree. After receiving a total of $5 million from the government and charity donations, Kathy went to the store, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on clothes, shoes and purses, and even paid for her friends' plastic surgery, including breast reductions, eye lifts and Botox injections. Many of those who opened their wallets for Kathy were angry when they saw their money go to fancy clothes and home renovations.
