Released: Bruce's Story

Released from a North Carolina prison after serving back-to-back sentences, Bruce, the father of two teenagers and a newborn daughter, is ready to face the challenges that come with being a newly freed man after being away from his family for 15 years.

"I missed so much, but, at the same time, I feel like I learned a lot," Bruce says. Although Bruce regrets not being there for his children, he credits prison with saving his life. Bruce says he became a better communicator and even earned his GED while incarcerated. In fact, he managed to secure a job while in prison that allowed him to save money to help support his growing family—and he'll continue to work that job when he gets out.

"I can't wait to just get out there and, you know, feel what it's like to be in society again."
