While meeting with her son Simeon's court-appointed attorney regarding his legal guardianship, Kay comes to realize that her path to an independent life with Simeon will be met with resistance because of her background of incarceration. "The hardest part of me being away was not being here with him," Kay says. "My desire is getting myself back on track and building a life back with Simeon."
