Why Tyler Perry Still Takes Care of the Abuser He Thought Was His Father

Throughout his childhood, Tyler Perry suffered violent physical abuse at the hands of the man he believed to be his father. Today, Tyler has made peace with the brutality in his past, and says that he continues to support his abuser for two reasons.

First, Tyler says, he's fulfilling a promise he made to his mother. Secondly, he's reciprocating, with deliberate limitations. "I'm giving him what he gave to me: I had shelter; I had food. He has shelter—pretty nice shelter—and any food that he wants to eat," Tyler says.

One thing Tyler will not provide for this man, however, is a relationship. Watch as he explains how he sets his boundaries in their complicated arrangement.
