Why Lynn Whitfield Didn't Initially See Her Pregnancy as a "Gift"

Lynn Whitfield admits that when she married director Brian Gibson, a Buddhist, it was an adjustment to get used to his chanting and unfamiliar practices—especially the time he told Lynn that the spirit of their unborn daughter was ready to join the family. At the time, Lynn was not expecting and was intensely focused on her blossoming career.

Despite dismissing the idea, Lynn immediately got pregnant. "I was just, like, so upset about all of this," she recalls. "I cried and cried and cried and cried and cried."

Lynn says that her daughter, Grace, is a blessing. "Sometimes, we don't know, but God knows," she says. "You're being given a gift; it just doesn't feel like it."
