The Betrayal That Taught Gladys Knight About the Music Industry

Season 6 Episode 609
Aired on 09/23/2017 | CC tv-pg
Gladys Knight's introduction to the music business was not a pleasant one. In the early days of her legendary career, she and her music group, the Pips—later renamed Gladys Knight & the Pips—thought they were doing a favor for a local Atlanta club owner by helping him test his recording equipment after one of their gigs. Much to the up-and-coming group's dismay, they would later discover that one of their original songs, "Every Beat of My Heart," which they had been tricked into recording that fateful night, had been released without their permission.

Here, Gladys looks back on the incident that served as a big wake-up call about the cold realities of the music industry.
