In 1992, Lynn Whitfield's marriage to director Brian Gibson had fallen apart, work was slowing down after the birth of her daughter, Grace, and her hometown of Los Angeles was in turmoil in the wake of the Rodney King riots. Feeling lost and finding herself alone that New Year's Eve, the actress decided to explore the part of her faith that lay beyond rose quartz and tarot cards. So, she went to church.

"That was the beginning of me starting to really find out what grace is," Lynn says. "I didn't really have that personal relationship [with God], like a personal relationship where you can just sit and say, 'Okay, God, you got my back.' And I have that now—and that's probably the most authentic part of me at this point in my life."

Here, Lynn opens up about the New Year's Eve church visit that led to her current faith.
