Iyanla "Adopts" a Man Who Lacks a Supportive Mother

Iyanla says that when she's working with large groups, it's not uncommon for one individual to capture her heart as a mother. In this particular group of formerly incarcerated men convicted of murder, Iyanla's heart has been captured by 37-year-old Roderick.

Growing up, Roderick did not have a caring, supportive mother to guide him and help him make good choices. That changes today, Iyanla asserts. "There's a distinction: You know, family we are related to by blood, but you get an opportunity to choose relatives," she says. "You need a mama, and I'd love to adopt you."

The gesture moves Roderick to tears. "It's a strange feeling," he says. "I don't know how to have a family. I didn't know I needed one."

"You'll learn," she says.
