Iyanla: "A Man Is Who His Mother Makes Him to Be"

While digging deep into the pasts of four formerly incarcerated men, Iyanla instructs each man to address their long-held anger toward their mothers. For 37-year-old Roderick, however, Iyanla tries a different approach—she is the one to voice her anger toward Roderick's mom, who chose drugs over her children.

"I'm angry with your mother because she didn't know how important you were in the world. Angry with her. I'm angry with your mother for the pain that you are living today," Iyanla tells Roderick as he sits in silence. "I hold her responsible because a man is who his mother makes him to be!"

Here, Iyanla passionately expresses her frustration at the fact that Roderick's mother shirked her responsibilities as a parent and contributed to the dysfunction that brought him to this point in his life.
