One Hundred Years of Solitude, "After my father died, the book that sort of saved my life was Gabriel García Márquez's novel,
One Hundred Years of Solitude. I think books are like people: they turn up in your life exactly when you most need them."

Carolina Herrera
Venezuelan-born fashion designer Carolina Herrera says reading is her passion and this novel is one of her great loves.
"I read One Hundred Years of Solitude when it came out in 1968, and it was amazing. It's the most magical book I have ever read. The first time I met [Gabriel García Márquez] was through the pages of his fantastic book. Later, I met him in person and I thought he was brilliant, charming and very witty. I think he has influenced the world."

Actress Darryl Hannah, who majored in literature in college, says that reading a García Márquez book takes her to another world.
"He literally makes you smell and taste and feel like you're somewhere else, because his use of language is so poetic and so visceral. It's so much fun to read, unexpected and beautiful. He's such an inspiring writer because he makes you dream."

Singer and Grammy Award winner Shakira is an international singing
sensation. She and García Márquez are fellow Colombians and have become friends
in the last few years.
"I went to the White House and listened to then-President Bill Clinton say that his favorite novel was One Hundred Years of Solitude. At
that moment I felt so proud to be Colombian. [Gabriel García Márquez] has
achieved the ultimate purpose of an artist, which is to be able to transform the
most insignificant details of reality into something magical."
