The Best Makeup for Your Hair Color and Skin Tone

Haircolor does more than just color your hair—it puts your complexion in a whole new light. We asked celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg how to make sure your new hue doesn’t clash with you.

Fair Skin

So You're Going Blonder
The goal is to lighten up: If you usually wear black eyeliner, switch to brown. Try pastel shades of lavender or pink on eyes, lips and cheeks.

So You're Going Browner
Try earthy browns on your eyes, pink or peach blush and sheer versions of wine or merlot on lips—just don't go with anything too intense.

So You're Going Redder
Your ideal tones are in the peach and orange family. Try a soft terracotta eyeshadow, peachy gold blush and an apricot-nude lip.

Medium Skin

So You're Going Blonder
You can go a little richer. Try black-brown liner, gold eyeshadow and cabernet lipsticks.

So You're Going Browner
Kick things up a notch with rich blue liner on your eyes (think navy). You're good with just about any blush shade. For your lips, stick to a nude or petal pink.

So You're Going Redder
Have fun with warm colors—cool shades can wash you out. Plummy purples will look great on your lids, and a scarlet lip is striking. Too bold? Try a purple-pink.

Olive Skin

So You're Going Blonder
Bring out the warmth of your skin tone with a soft pea-green eyeshadow. Pair it with baby pink on your cheeks and lips.

So You're Going Browner
Sweep a shimmery taupe on eyes, a peachy pink blush on cheeks and a matte brown on lips.

So You're Going Redder
Your hair is a standout shade, so make a statement without adding a lot of color: black graphic liner and mascara, a peach flush and a creamy coral pout.

Dark Skin

So You're Going Blonder
Opt for bronzy earth tones around your eyes, pink on cheeks and berry on lips.

So You're Going Browner
Try burnt orange eyeshadow (trust us, it's beautiful), a sweep of gold highlighter on cheeks and deep red on lips.

So You're Going Redder
You can wear anything with an orange or red undertone. Try bronzed gold on lids, a red-toned blush and an orange red lip.
