The advice I live by...
This came from my mom: Happiness is your own responsibility. You can't look to your relationship, to your kids, to your career, to your anything from the outside to fill you up. You have to find it in the small things in everyday life—which I do a million times a day: a hot cup of tea, a humming bird. Stop, take that in, receive it, get joy from it.
The one piece of information that would have made adolescence a tiny bit easier...
I wish someone had told me that it's okay to not know exactly who you are until you're older. In high school, I thought I was supposed to be part of a group. I didn't have some incredible group of friends until I started working in theater during college. If I could've just known that I might never be part of a group, but that I would always have the same consistent friends for my whole life, I could have drawn comfort from that.
The thing I'm determined not to learn the hard way...
I'm on my third child, and I'm determined not to learn this the hard way this time: When I'm done nursing, I have to actually stop eating like a teenager before I wean the baby, not after.
The most daring thing I've ever done...
Jump off a building. You can't train for it. You just have to not say no when they shove you out the window of a 15-story building.
The most daring thing I wish I'd ever done...
Gone to live in a place I didn't know, where I did not speak the language. I get super lost everywhere I go—I get lost in my hometown, so I'm pretty used to that feeling. But I'm always optimistic that I'll find my way.
My hidden talent...
Pizza making. I do the dough and the sauce—and my pizzas occasionally border on genius.
The thing that's easiest to forget...
We are so wrong about people so much of the time. It's so easy to assume something negative if somebody is a little frigid the first time you meet him or you read an email wrong. So I always try to remind myself to assume the positive.
The best way to spend $20 is...
Chocolate.
