Aired on 01/15/2017 | CC tv-pg
U.S. Rep. John Lewis can never forget the moment he learned of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was his dear friend and mentor. Nearly half a century later, the congressman is still moved to tears as he recalls hearing of Dr. King's murder in 1968.

Rep. Lewis was working on Sen. Robert Kennedy's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination at the time and says he was beyond heartbroken when Sen. Kennedy broke the news. "It was a sad and dark hour," Rep. Lewis says. "I didn't know what was happening to this country, really. And for me, I felt like something had died in America. And I think something died in all of us."
