In 2004, then-U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and her mother, Dorothy, joined Oprah on The Oprah Winfrey Show to give their first mother-daughter interview together. After the show, Oprah was curious to know what early advice from Sen. Clinton's mother had stayed with her through the years. One especially profound statement that the former first lady said continued to guide her was the following: "You can either be the actor in your own life, or you can react to everybody else."

Dorothy then discussed the guidance she sought from her community in raising a girl (Hillary was her first daughter) who would be well equipped to thrive—and it seemed to work!
