Dr. Robin Smith

According to Dr. Robin, people who are involved in a church, synagogue, mosque or other place of worship often find that they benefit both spiritually and emotionally. She says active participation in a community of faith can give individuals a sense of connection and belonging that so many of us seek. "It's nurturing, it's supportive, it often creates a community—a place where you can feel at home," she says.

Similarly, Dr. Robin says that people who disconnect from their faith community—whether because of a move or other life circumstances—often feel a sense of loss. If you feel like something's missing from your life, consider reconnecting with the faith or religious practices that you feel can enhance and enrich your spirit, she says. "If you are feeling disenfranchised or lonely or somehow out of the loop, you can go to your place of religious worship and have a sense of connection," she says.
