Dr. Robin Smith
Fannie Lou Hamer was the granddaughter of slaves and a civil rights activist in the 1960s. Dr. Robin says Fannie Lou's famous quote, "I am sick and tired of being sick and tired", can be applied to your life and motivate you to accomplish your goals. "What that translates into is someone who got rid of making excuses," Dr. Robin says. "Get rid of all the reasons why your life isn't what you want it to be and decide you are going to stop complaining."

Complaining about something in your life to friends and family can take up hours of your time and zap your energy, Dr. Robin says. "The time I am using to complain and whine and talk to you, I could be creating a strategy or meditating or jogging or doing something that would lead me to a goal," she says. Instead of complaining, Dr. Robin says you need to take action. "You've got to put some boundaries around how much time are you going to give to venting and how much time are you going to give to taking action and planning a strategy and figuring out what it is you need to do," she says.

No matter what it is that you would like to change about your life, Dr. Robin says you can get one step closer to reaching that goal by simply living in the spirit of Fannie Lou's quote. Decide to stop making excuses in your life, Dr. Robin says. "That means you are going to report for active duty and show up in your life as a grown up, and do what it takes to make your life into what you want it to be."
