He's known as the documentary filmmaker who pushes the limits—producing often controversial documentaries on social and political topics—but despite his reputation, Michael Moore says his motivation as a filmmaker is rooted in deep faith and spirituality. Marianne talks with Michael about his religious convictions and his role in society.

Growing up Catholic, Michael says he wanted to be a priest and even went to seminary school. While he ended up leaving the seminary, Michael says the Catholic tradition of working for social justice is engrained in his soul. "I do believe that we are to love our enemies and do good to those who persecute you," he says. "I believe that there is power and strength in that."

Michael says a strong spiritual component exists in everything he does. "I'm not on some crusade, I'm just kind of responding to my conscious and doing what I think I should be doing and saying as a citizen in a democracy," he says.

Marianne says that Michael is a truth teller; he says he is just trying to provide Americans with critical information that could help solve important problems. "I believe that when you provide information to people, they become less fearful and they will engage more in their democracy if they are empowered with information," he says.
