![]() Are you a long-term smoker? Do you overeat? Maybe you are shy and avoid social situations. Dr. Robin says bad habits come in all forms, and no matter what anyone says, you can kick them and change your life. "One of the biggest misconceptions we have as human beings is that we are stuck with who we are." Dr. Robin says.
Dr. Robin says a habit—good or bad—is something that you do over and over. "You are what you repeatedly do—so excellence then is not an act—it is a habit," she says. Replacing a bad habit with a good habit is the best way to stop bad behavior and improve your life. "Usually when we think of habits, we think of habits as being something negative, something we want to get rid of, but there are great habits," Dr. Robin says. When you have the urge to smoke, Dr. Robin says you should go for a walk or exercise in some way. If you want to quit drinking, you should consistently stay away from places that serve alcohol. "If you are in that rut, that habit is cheating you of living life to the fullest," she says. "The next thing you know, you will have created a new habit and a new life."
