![]() Dr. Robin says the "everyone-should-be-like-me" mentality robs us of so much richness in our lives. In order to create a real relationship with someone, you must accept and respect their values, she says.
Where are the places where you have pushed your way, where you have ignored someone's opinion because they don't match yours? Dr. Robin says that all strong relationships—whether it's marriage, friendships, connections at work—thrive on accepting and respecting our differences. "It doesn't mean that you agree; it doesn't mean that it's right or wrong," Dr. Robin says. "It means that you're making room for another person's perspective." Dr. Robin urges listeners to create bridges with people who have different backgrounds, interests and beliefs. "Let your attitude expand itself so that there is room for your way of living in the world—your views and your perspective—and there is room for the other. There is no way you can ever create connection and lasting and meaningful love, in any relationship...if you're making the ways in which they live in the world not of value."
