Hi Harpobear, I was in the studio audience for this show, and I have to say I felt like I was watching the taping of an episode of Jerry Springer, or Maury Povitch (who's your Daddy?, no wait, he's your Mommy!). What the heck were the producers thinking? Must be sweeps week. Thomas and Nancy were there to promote his new book, nothing else. No matter how much testosterone she took, Thomas was born a female, and genetically will always be female. A hormonally-challenged pregnant female? Not newsworthy. Thomas told his story as if he and Nancy were forced to announce the pregnancy against their wishes, and would suffer and dread any additional publicity. Yeah, right. In the few days since the taping, I've learned that Thomas initiated the uproar by posting an announcement that he is the "World's First Pregnant Man" on Advocate.com. And, prior to his surgeries, Thomas, then Tracy, was a major and outspoken lesbian activist in Hawaii. Oprah herself mentioned their upcoming interview in People magazine. Serveral times during the taping, Nancy referred to Thomas's soon to be published book. This just reeks of a self-promoting publicity stunt. Sorry. My family and I have waited a very long time to attend the Oprah show, and we left after the taping feeling stunned and slightly disgusted. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not referring to gays/lesbians and transgenders in general, as I have gay freinds that I adore.) I just didn't get the warm fuzzies from this couple.
I completely agree! I am so irked by this being on the news. I'm pregnant so if I say I'm a cat does that mean that I'll get to be on Oprah? This story is get crazy. I feel bad for transgender people I really do because I couldnt imagine their struggle in life but this man is really a woman so you arent special by getting pregnant.
How disappointing. As a rule, I don't watch talk shows, but when I do watch one, it's usually the Oprah Winfrey show, because she seems to hold herself to a higher standard. At least I thought she did. Seems she's taking on more of Jerry Springer's brand of sensationalism every day. Obviously this is a transgendered person who is pregnant, not a "man." Feel sorry for the kid. Obviously this infant's parents are seeking fame and a book deal. If they really wanted to be good parents, they would never subject their child to such intense public scrutiny or potential ridicule. How selfish. Oprah, what's your point in airing this show and "marketing" it in such a sensational way? Who, exactly, do you feel you will be helping with this show??
I am disappointed that Harpo Studios and Oprah has chosen to do & then air this show. For what purpose? To get higher ratings, which is something Oprah has said she never does? This is clearly exploitation of this couple. Once it is known that Thomas was born a woman and continues to have working ovaries and utuerus there is no story. Except for the poor child who will be born into this media circus of which Oprah & harpo Studios is now a part of. I will not be watching and will be encouraging other not to watch.:(
Wow, and I thought this "married guy" thing was just a hoax, since taking testosterone for a substantial amount of time can be harmful to ovaries. If this Thomas character is genetically a woman, and just lives life or "pretends" to be a man, whom cares...not I.
Ugg!!! The Pregnant Man?? What makes him a man?? He has a female reproductive system!! That make's him a SHE! Now I'm trying to explain this to my 6 year old son who heard this on a commercial. What is next? I'm disappointed that the Oprah Show advertised this subject even further!
I have a DVR and I get to watch the Oprah show once I'm home. I was very unhappy to see the upcoming show of the pregnant guy. I will be erasing it as soon as I get home. Oprah really sunk low on this one. Kinda like the stripper show with the gal that needed to feed her kids. Well, guess what...she's married and to a doctor no less...come on Oprah you know better...I too would love to take my daughter to see the show, but not if it's going to be like the one they are going to show, it's not worth it. Oprah wants for all of us to live our best life, but she certainly isn't showing it here. I'm sorry you went to all the trouble to go and had to sit through that. I love watching Oprah and have learned a lot, but she needs to keep it to the high standard she used to have.
When I first saw the advertisement for Thursday's show I actually thought..wow...this is it...the world's first pregnant man, but then I googled it and found out that it's just a trans-gendered person with female organs still inside...that was disappointing. I feel like that is something that would be on Maury or Jerry...not Oprah. I feel like Oprah has sunk really low....I record her show everyday and I have to admit I only watch it about 2-3 times a week now...some of the shows are just too crazy or they are too depressing. I'm a stay-at-home mom and I would like some upbeat positive shows that inspire and make me feel happy. I don't want to waste an hour of my precious time watching someone who is a man on the outside but has the reproductive organs of a female. I could go rent +Transamerica+ the movie if I wanted that kind of entertainment.
I just heard about this yesterday! I guess I'm a little out of the loop. I figured she was transgender obviously, but looked it up just to be sure-you never know these days. I have to say, I am really disturbed and offended by this story and this situation. Maybe because it is so new to me, I'm not sure, but it really makes me uncomfortable. First and foremost, he is a SHE. I don't care who declares her a man just to say you can get married, your DNA is your DNA and that never changes regardless of what the state says. She is a woman, and I don't seem to remember gaining a spot on Oprah or any other talk show when I was pregnant with my two sons. Secondly, I am offended as a woman who is proud to be a woman. Pregnancy is a gift, not something to be sensationalized and made a mockery out of, which is exactly what this twisted situation is doing. I'm sorry, but I can only take acceptance so far, and this has crossed the line. And what about the medical implications? This woman has been taking testosterone for years. What are the long term effects of this? What are the effects on the fetus/baby long term? What doctor felt this was an "ethical" procedure? This woman made a CHOICE to try to be become a man. Why then, is she now pregnant? Is she only a man when it is convenient for her and suits her needs but decides to flip flop when the other side has something to offer that she can't have? How confident then is she in her choice to be a so called man? Apparently not very confident. And why hasn't the state stepped in and revoked their "legal" marriage. The state claimed she was a he inside and out through all her medical procedures and hormones, and decided these two can legally be married as man and wife but clearly she is a she! She clearly is not a man inside and out! Why is their marriage still legal? This is absolutely disgusting. What is wrong with people these days? Does no one have any sense of morality left in them anymore? I pray my 5 year old does not catch whim of this as I do not even know where to start with an explanation on this one. And what about this unborn child? How do you explain that your dad had you? Absolutely rediculous and a complete mockery out of medical science.
i am so excited that this is going to be on! when i was porego 9 yrs ago there was a gy named pop the first prego man i was intrigued but never thought it was real. i mean come on this is going to be very interesting and entertaining ! i can't wait !
I am also an Oprah fan who records and watches the Oprah show daily. I do love Oprah and the show, but there are times when there are guests and/or topics that I just don't like or care to watch or listen too. I don't always know the reason why a certain topic or guests makes it on the show, but that is why we can tune in or choose not too. Or we can chat on the message boards. I have tried a number times to get tickets to the show, but I have never been successful. I do know that if I did get tickets and made it too a show where the topic was difficult or just something that truly bothered me, I would be disappointed, but would try to recall the many shows I have enjoyed. I do understand how you would feel about it. As for this story..... I too saw the preview and thought WHAT???? My mind started to wander and so I came to the web site to learn more. It is just as I suspected and as everyone here is talking about. I feel the real issue here is exactly as "jennazer" states. She is not a he. She wanted to be a "he" and now he wants to be part of a she? How messed up can you be? Apparently, now he is a woman trapped in a mans body? This is why, at times, I find these topics difficult to accept. Some people just don't know what they want, need, or are looking for. I wonder if there was discussion about the delivery? I'm sure that is when She becomes a He again. I also wonder if Oprah brings up any of these kinds of questions? I do want to watch the show, but you can bet I will NEVER buy their book. I also find it disturbing and I'm wondering what kind of book they will write when they split up and fight over the kid.
Since I have a transgendered daughter in my family and I know she is the same person she was before her transition. This story is very believable to me. Just because someone takes pills or has some surgery, it does not change who or what they are.
Nancy
I have a comment rsegarding the transguy having a baby in Oregon.
I’ve been writing this email for a few days trying to find just the right thing to say. First let me start with I applaud this family for taking the alternative and seriously ”out of the box” approach to having a family. Wow! That’s determination!
Next I'll share that I am also a transguy. I am 43 and have been in transition over 5 years. I have collided head-on with other transguys in conversation regarding my personal view to MY gender which is very fluid. However even with my own progressive ideas about gender I find a ton of resistance for even basic acceptance from all walks of life. I cannot even begin to imagine how Thomas thinks his pregnancy will open the minds of America with positive results. We, as transguys, already have a tremendously difficult time getting people to take our gender issue seriously simply because it’s not something most people have to consciously consider much less grapple over the physical vs. mental incongruenceies.
The publicity of this issue is much like that of Gay Pride – the media seems to frequently pick the extreme to represent our (GBLTQ) community when a whole other world of regular every day people (much less exciting people) really represent the majority of the community. PLEASE during your show will you balance out the story by mentioning the other side of the coin?
The majority of transgender and transsexual men would never consider carrying or birthing a child much less be physically ABLE due to sterilization which is usually WANTED as a part of the transition process. Thomas has made a very controversial choice for his pregnancy but the egocentric media blast is what has many people in both mainstream and the trans community so upset and confused. Mainstream USA just thinks he is nuts and I feel like he has single handedly kicked transguys everywhere square in the groin. So much for all the hard work we’ve all done for decades trying to get people to take us seriously as sane, valuable men in the world.
His choice (for the media) scares me because prejudice breads fear and fear breeds violence. I don’t want to get killed because he wants to be known for being the man who had a baby.
That's what so great about the USA...everyone has a right to voice their opinions. But I really don't care about the adults, they are able to make decisions for themselves. But have you thought about the child? He/she had no choice but yet has to live with the consequences. It just seems very sa to me. I get the impression from your message that you are young, maybe in a few years you will see it differently. Enjjoy the show!
