I know Oprah thinks Skype is the neatest thing since sliced bread but from a viewer at home's standpoint, it's not all that cool. Something about seeing someone through a camera at their location via the location where Oprah is located, makes seeing these people feel very 3rd hand and disconnected. I dislike it more than I ever dreamed I could. It feels incredibly awkward and rarely do these people ever enhance the topic much. I hope "around the world with Skype" proves me wrong since it looks like it's here to stay.
There for awhile Oprah had random people on the show, such as the cooking segments, where random folks were cooking meals and such. This is something I thought was just weird. I don't really care to see just random folks for no real reason. It just was rather boring.
|As a home viewer, the whole skype thing is quite annoying. There seems to be some kind of delay which makes it awkard when the guest and Oprah don't talk in sync. Then to watch someone on tv through another monitor is not enjoyable. Please enough with all the skyping.
I completely agree with the comments above. The other thing that really annoys me is when she says certain guests will be on the show and it turns out they aren't on the show at all, they're on skype. After the inevitable delays, scrambled signals and talking all over each other I don't even care to hear the conversation anymore. I wish Oprah wouldn't say she has guests on the show when they're just on skype, it just isn't the same at all!
Yeah, I have to agree with having Bruno as a guest on skype. It was better to see him on skype rather than live. He wouldn't have liked being in the studio and the audience wouldn't have appreciated his appetite as much in real life.
I loved the way his human companion kept sliding a new platter of food in front of him to keep him in front of the camera and occupied. He could have cared less if anybody was watching him eat!
g2gpeace4a, loved the skype on Bruno the Bear. Love youre cats helmet!!!!!!

I agree with some of the previous comments that to Skype guests is kind of deceitful when
the audience is expecting a live body and all they get is a techno being. But
that could easily be remedied in the show trailers.
I do have to say that I love Skype. I haven’t been able to be with and actually
touch my sister for more than five years but now every day I can see her and
talk to her. It isn’t a perfect system
(yet) but thanks to my computer and this wonderful technology I can see the way
she rolls her eyes and presses her lips tightly together when I nag her about
her smoking or her messy hair and when I make her laugh it just takes my heart
away. We can share our lives again. Just the other day as her cat jumped into her
lap and then proceeded to strut across the keyboard of her computer we both
yelled “Get down Zeke!” at the same time.
I hope that the whole world will one day be able to Skype. And just think of our world. If more talk shows Skyped their out of town
guests and more businesses held Skype conferences they would reduce their
carbon foot print and possibly even become carbon neutral. Less flying now and maybe in the future there
will still be aviation fuel and our children and grandchildren will be able to
travel our beautiful world as well.
Two years ago we hosted an exchange student from Chile. Through the use of Skype we have remained connected with our Chilean son and several members of his family, as well. It's wonderful to be able to chat at all hours of the day or night. They live as far south of the Equator as we live north of it - and it's all for free!
We've been using Skype for a couple of years now and it has been so wonderful for keeping in touch with family.
The funniest thing we use it for is watching TV. My brother-in-law is stationed in Seoul, Korea right now and he doesn't get a chance to watch a lot of the shows he loved from back in the states. They're not available online to him, either. So sometimes we'll set up a chair in front of the TV and put the laptop on it. Then we connect with Preston via Skype and we all watch "The Office" together! It's become pretty normal to us, but it's still funny once in a while to realize that there's a laptop sitting in the middle of the room, laughing along with you ...
As for comments from other viewers about Skype being annoying on the show, I completely disagree. I can't imagine what it's like to have the celebrity status of someone like Oprah and it must be really nice for her to have a safe, easy way to be in contact with lots of viewers. Plus, using Skype in place of flying guests in from all over the place, many of whom are only for a few minutes, is a great enviromentally-friendly choice! I love Skype!
I love SKYPE. Today I am in my home office in West Chester, Ohio. I own a home based travel agency and I love to travel. When I started in the travel business 22 years ago, I said, "If I could only have a modem in the sand, I would be delighted as I would be able to run my business from anywhere in the world." Skype has made that possible. Recently my husband and I spent a month in Puerto Vallarta and everyday I would go to my "office" on the balcony overlooking Banderas Bay. I was able to call clients who also have Skype and if they didn't have Skype, I was able to call them from my computer to their landline in the United States for a total of $2.95 per month for all calls. What was especially great was that my clients also had fun when they found out that I was not in my home office but in a destination that they might was to visit. The quality of the calls was great. Most people said I sounded like I was right next door. SKYPE has definitely allowed me to take my business with me and NOW I have my modem in the sand.
All of these negative comments! I absolutely LOVE skype.... I was really excited to see this segment actually, because I could not live without it. My fiance is currently deployed in the middle east, and it would be impossible to hear from otherwise. Of course I love getting letters and email from him, but without skype I wouldnt be able to see his face and blow him kisses every night!
Its very difficult to plan your future with someone when they arent physically with you. Skype has allowed us to be physically present in each others lives until he comes home in September!
I love Skype! My husband is on his second tour in Iraq. Thanks to Skype I can actually sit at my kitchen table and have a face to face conversation with him on Saturday and Sunday mornings! It helps our kids stay connected with dad. There's something very comforting about being able to see someone whose half way across the world. It makes the long separation bearable! I couldn't live with out it. I think it's great that Oprah is showing the world how easy and FREE it is to talk to loved ones anywhere!
