Environmental designer Danny Seo gives actress Kerry Washington's apartment a makeover that's spirit-lifting (those colors!), life-smoothing (that office!), and planet-friendly.
When Kerry Washington moved into her West Hollywood apartment she didn't pay much attention to the decor. "I thought I didn't care about that stuff," says the 32-year-old actress, who appears in historian Howard Zinn's forthcoming documentary The People Speak, and stars opposite Eddie Murphy in the comedy A Thousand Words, out this fall. "I always prided myself on the fact that I could live out of milk crates forever. It was kind of my way of detaching from materialism."

What Washington did care about was that the apartment accommodate her eco-conscious lifestyle. That meant a neighborhood within walking distance of such conveniences as a farmers' market (for locally grown organic produce) so she could keep her Prius in the garage. But when her friend Danny Seo came to see her new home, the interior designer and lifestyle expert was blunt. "I told her the apartment was ugly and not even functional. I didn't think it reflected her appreciation for beauty and concern about the environment."

Seo convinced her to let him give the apartment an "eco-makeover." She knew he would not only make her new place functional and beautiful but keep it economical (she's no spendthrift) and use materials that were aligned with her eco-conscious values. "She basically handed me the keys and said, 'Have fun!'" Seo recalls.
