How can you fake a flawless complexion? Effortless retouching—and you can even do it straight from your smartphone.

What it does: The camera's Make-Up Mode adjusts the light level in the photos to smooth and brighten skin, remove shadows and shine, and give your complexion a matte finish that simulates the effect of a great foundation. There are 12 light settings, from low (for pictures with just a few shadows) to strong (useful for getting rid of freckles).

What we liked: It's easy to use. Find the light level that makes your subject's face look perfectly made up but still natural, then press the shutter.

MoreBeaute App (Free, iTunes.com)

What it does: The application (compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad) reduces the appearance of wrinkles, freckles, and blemishes, and smooths uneven skin tone. Select a picture from your photo gallery or take a new one with your phone, and the application will generate an enhanced version.

What we liked: It's easy to go back to the original "before" picture to see how your improved photo compares. And the app allows you to adjust the smoothing and brightness levels until you're happy with the results.

PicTreat.com (Free)

What it does: The program gets rid of skin imperfections and eliminates red-eye. It's the same idea as MoreBeaute—you select a photo and PicTreat enhances it—but this site is accessible from any computer.

What we liked: You can sign in to your Facebook, MySpace, Photobucket, or Flickr page from the Web site and select a picture to retouch. When the photo is ready, you can upload it back to your profile or album, add it to your blog or Twitter page, or e-mail it to a friend.
