Am I Doing This Right? Twist Outs
When she styled her curly hair, Alexius Diana, 30,wound up with pieces going in different directions and, occasionally, frizz. Hairstylist Anthony Dickey, owner of the Hair Rules Salon in New York City, showed her how to get smoother, more uniform results.

Step 1
Protect your hair by working a golf-ball-size amount of leave-in conditioner through wet strands. Dry hair using a blow-dryer with a comb attachment to detangle, which also helps the conditioner penetrate deeply.

Step 2
Section your hair and saturate it with a gel formulated specifically for curls. Then take two strands and twist them close to the scalp. Twist in a zigzag pattern (one piece to the right, then one to the left) so hair will lie more evenly once the twists are out.

Step 3
Sit under a hooded dryer until the gel is completely dry (this may take an hour or longer). Alternatively, you can sleep in your twists overnight.

Step 4
After carefully unraveling the twists (starting from the ends and working toward the roots), scrunch a little finishing cream throughout your hair to add moisture and shine and to prevent any flyaways. Finish by gently fluffing hair all over.
