The 2010 Spring Makeup O-Wards

Some competitions can get ugly—but not this one. For our third annual contest to determine the most brilliant new spring makeup, we marveled at row after gorgeous row of lush lipsticks, vivid shadows, shimmering face powders, and blushes. After a couple of weeks of smudging, dusting, and blending (and a whole lot of makeup remover wipes), we narrowed the field to the season's 27 winners, all of them utterly resplendent.

FOR YOUR LIPS
Grown-up, glamorous alternatives to the supershiny mouth.1. Loveliest Lipstick Texture
Shiseido Makeup Perfect Rouge Glowing Matte Lipstick ($25; department stores)
Glowing matte doesn't have to be an oxymoron. Shiseido has managed to marry the rich color and longevity of a matte lipstick with the subtle sheen and hydration of a balm. It's a triumphant union.
2. Most Comprehensive Color Range
Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Crème Lip Colour ($30; Chanel.com)
Chanel has always taken lipstick seriously (one of their classic bags even includes a dedicated lipstick pocket), and the brand's latest collection has the most stunning array of colors we've seen in a long time: amber peach, intense black plum, deep violet, bright blue red...and 26 more!
3. Most Intruiging: New Bullet Shape
1. Avon Ultra Color Rich Mega Impact Lipstick ($8; Avon.com)
2. Clé de Peau Beauté Extra Rich Lipstick ($60; Barneys.com)
These faceted lipsticks are an impressive feat of cosmetic architecture. But they're more than just a pleasure to behold: Use their chiseled edges to line the contours of your mouth precisely, before filling in your lips with saturated, velvety color.
4. Easiest (And Most Affordable) Way to Wear A Designer Brand This Spring
Estée Lauder Michael Kors Very Hollywood Lip Gloss in Bungalow Pink ($20; EsteeLauder.com)
Designer Michael Kors crafts luxurious classics with an edge—and his limited edition makeup collaboration with Estée Lauder is no exception. This pink gloss is clean and simple, but the color is deep enough to pack a punch.

FOR YOUR EYES
Gold—and purple and periwinkle—medalists for your lids and lashes.1. Most Flattering Version of the Season's Trendiest Color:
Each spring an eye-makeup color emerges as the season's clear favorite. Maybe it's orange (and we ignore it), maybe it's green (and we make do). This year it's purple—and while we had our doubts, these dazzling iterations of violet, lavender, and lilac made us believers.
Rimmel Glam'Eyes Mono Eye Shadow in Royal Violet ($3.50; drugstores)
Revlon Luxurious Color Perle Eye Shadow in Lilac Shimmer ($5; drugstores)
Maybelline New York Color Plush Silk Eyeshadow quad in Legendary Lilac ($10; drugstores)
Dior 5-Colour Iridescent Dentelle in Pearl Glow ($57; department stores)
Yves Saint Laurent Ombres 5 Lumières in Parisian Sky ($56; YSLBeautyUS.com)
Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow in Fancy Pansy ($18; benefitcosmetics.com)
2. Most All-Around Fun Eyeshadow
Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Liquid Eyeshadow in Ultra Violet, Molten Bronze, and Aqua Flash, ($17.50 each; EsteeLauder.com)
One swipe of these light, supercreamy shadows delivers a delicate wash of metallic color. Two swipes leave lids with a more vivid tint—but it still won't crease or flake all day.
3. Prettiest Palette
Chantecaille Les Dauphins ($77; Chantecaille.com)
They're almost too beautiful to use, but once you do, you'll love these pearl-infused powders and their silky feel on your lids. (Five percent of proceeds from the palette goes to Tethys, a research institute dedicated to the study and conservation of the Mediterranean's marine environment.)
4. Most Satisfying Mascara
Avon SuperExtend Mascara ($8.50; Avon.com)
This mascara fulfills every lash need imaginable: Tiny fibers create remarkable length, an antistatic ingredient prevents clumping, and a soft plastic brush glides over lashes smoothly from root to ends. A sure way to up your batting average.

FOR YOUR SKIN
Brilliant new tools for a flawless complexion.1. Most Artful: New Undercover Agents
Neutrogena SkinClearing Blemish Concealer ($10; drugstores)
CoverGirl & Olay Simply Ageless Concealer ($11; drugstores)
Both of these concealers are spiked with a little something extra. The first contains 0.5 percent salicylic acid, so it helps heal a pimple while keeping it under wraps. The second is swirled with Olay's niacinamide-infused Regenerist serum, and softens lines as it masks dark circles.
2. Best Bronzer
Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Mineral Bronzing Powder ($35; Macys.com)
Many bronzers are brilliant—as in glittery. This one is brilliant—as in very clever. An adjustable sifter lets you dose out just the right amount of powder; a mini powder brush unfolds to sit flat inside the compact. Most important, though, the color: It's golden, not muddy, without a speck of glitter.
3. Most Thrillingly Radiant Highlighter
Nars Orgasm Illuminator ($29; NarsCosmetics.com)
The fifth addition to Nars's Orgasm line—a sheer glimmering lotion—is flecked with gold, peach, and pink and gives your face a lit-from-within glow. Use it all over on bare skin, as a highlighter on cheekbones and lids, or mixed with your liquid foundation. We think you'll find it very...satisfying.
4. Most Ingenious Green Packaging
Physicians Formula Bamboo Wear ($7 for compact, $10 for powder or bronzer refills; drugstores)
This refillable compact, made of naturally sustainable bamboo, swings open to reveal both a mirror and a bamboo brush. The compact is magnetized, so when you run out of powder or bronzer, you can easily pop in a new one (and the empty pan can be recycled).
5. Freshest Foundations
1. Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind the Eraser ($13; drugstores)
2. Black Radiance Complexion Perfection Liquid Foundation ($8; drugstores)
A perfect foundation makes your skin look flawless and feels like nothing. These two meet both criteria. The first comes with a domed sponge applicator that lets you blend it seamlessly over the contours of your face. The second has the weightless texture of a tinted moisturizer but still offers serious coverage in four rich, dark shades that are oil-, paraben-, and fragrance-free.
6. Most Deceptively Wearable Blush
MAC Blush Ombre in Vintage Grape ($25; MacCosmetics.com)
We thought the season's purple trend had gone too far when we discovered this vivid powder blush. Then we tried it—and instantly brightened up. The blush goes on as a very flattering sheer raspberry. The darker your skin tone, the more powder you can swirl onto the apples of your cheeks.
