Mandy Moore Bundles Up in Fall's New Classics
From woolly wraps to sturdy boots to plaid everything, fall's tried-and-true pieces have a stylish new edge.
Mad for Plaid
A contemporary take on traditional Wellies, these high-heeled, over-the-knee boots define an outfit of pretty plaids in shades of blue and purple. "This jacket is one of those pieces you can dress up or down," Moore says of the Jason Wu wool coat with dolman sleeves. "I could throw it on with a cool T-shirt and jeans or with this dress and some heels."
Boots, J Shoes. Coat, Jason Wu, $1,565. Dress, Maisonette 1977, $595. Gloves, Max Mara. Tights, Falke. Bag, Tory Burch.
Double Vision
"I'm from the generation that grew up watching Aladdin and The Little Mermaid," says Moore, who found creating the voice of Rapunzel in Tangled to be "a lot more taxing than people might realize. There's nothing to look at—everything has to come from your imagination." Here, she reinterprets the lumberjack shirt: Wearing two together creates a fresh style. Add multiple silver necklaces, and the ultimate casual wear is ready for a night out.
Shirts, Rag & Bone, $355 each. Necklaces, Lois Hill, Lena Skadegard, Marie Todd, Gorjana, and Lucky Brand. Cuff, American Estate Jewelry. Ring, Ninaki. Belt, Linea Pelle Collection.
Autumn Mix
A versatile faux-shearling jacket spans the seasons and balances feminine clothes with its masculine edge. Adding to the blend of rugged and sweet are biker boots and a fedora. "This hat looks like something I borrowed from my grandpa," Moore says.
Jacket, Route 66, $50. Skirt, Ralph Lauren Blue Label, $498. Boots, Jimmy Choo. Fedora, Block Headwear. Shirt, Gap, $20. Scarf, Etro. Watch, Tag Heuer.
Fabulous Fakes
Fur is everywhere this fall, and luckily, a crop of stunning synthetics makes it possible to get the warmth and luxury without the guilt. Moore, who won't wear the real thing, wraps up in a sumptuous faux-mink cape. Underneath: a sheer button-down and pencil skirt. The classic hunting cap gets an update in a contrasting checkerboard pattern.
Cape, Trina Turk, $258. Button-down, Anna Sui, $356. Skirt, Etro, $1,180. Cap, Sonoma Life + Style. Ring, Kenneth Jay Lane for Jennifer Miller.
New Standbys
"Fall has always been my favorite time," says Moore, who lives in Los Angeles with her husband, musician Ryan Adams. "That sense of renewal is so ingrained from school." Undergoing their own renewal this year, checks look unexpectedly elegant on a slimming wool skirt paired with a cardigan, a bright scarf, and the season's hardy high-heeled boots.
Sweater, Magaschoni, $200. Skirt, L.L.Bean Signature, $179. Cardigan, Club Monaco, $149. Scarf, Baby Mo. Boots, D&G. Necklaces, Vanessa Mooney and Frieda & Nellie. Belt, Brave Beltworks.
SHIFTING GEARS
A tartan jacket makes a surprising match for this cheerful silk dress. Tall, weathered boots are a good fit for wherever the road leads.
Jacket, Woolrich John Rich & Bros., $875. Dress, Tucker, $275. Boots, Charles David,. Earrings, Virgins, Saints, & Angels. Necklace, Robyn Rhodes. Bracelet, Mars Jewelry. Tights, Fogal.
Nature Walk
Moore, who is 5'10", loves a good long skirt. "They're understated and easy, I can wear them with flats, and I never feel like they're wearing me," she says. This plaid chiffon skirt in earthy shades is a softer take on the typical checkerboard print. "The way it moves is so romantic," Moore says. With a generously cut wool coat over a thin sweater, the look strikes a perfectly modern balance.
Skirt, Peter Som, $2,580. Coat, Isabel Marant, $1,280. Sweater, J.Crew, $145. Bag, Rebecca Minkoff. Ring, Dean Davidson. Boots, Pedro Garcia.
