5 Fall Beauty Trends to Try (and 4 to Skip)
We break down the looks that flatter almost anyone...and those (granny updos?) that should be left on the runway.

Try Bold Brows
Give your tweezers some time off. This season thick arches framed models' faces at shows like Oscar de la Renta (at left). If your brows are looking sparse, fill in gaps using short, light strokes with a pencil.
Revlon has one with a tinted wax for defining brow shape on one end and a highlighter to accent your brow bone on the other.
Skip Retro Liner
Adding a harsh stripe of black liner in the crease of your eyelid (like Twiggy's) that can smudge and smear doesn't help downplay dark circles—even on 16-year-old models.
Try Rosy Blush
Smile and gently press a cream formula that melts into skin, like this
CoverGirl and Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush, onto the roundest part of your cheeks. Blend it up toward your temples for a post-workout glow (without ever setting foot on the treadmill).
Skip Stiff Updos
Creating a bouffant like this requires as much time as it does hairspray. Opt for a soft, low-maintenance style that doesn't belong in the Smithsonian.
Try a Sleek, Low Ponytail
Instead of going granny (as seen previously), try a bump-free pony that won't look frozen in time. To get a smooth finish like the models at Akris (at left), follow these simple steps:
1. Apply a pomade or spray wax, like
Redken Wax Blast 10, all over to tame flyaways. (If you have natural waves, use a flatiron from roots to ends first.)
2. Create a deep side part with a fine-tooth comb and pull hair into a low pony at the nape of your neck. Secure with an elastic.
3. Finish with hairspray for extra hold and shine.
Skip Pocahontas-Worthy Feathers
Wearing feathers in your hair—especially extra-large ones like these—can make you look more turkey than trendy.
Try Dramatic Lips
A coat of mascara and pearl eyeshadow are all you need when wearing red lipstick. If applying color straight from the tube leaves you with less-than-perfect results, try using a lip brush for more precision. Or apply lipstick to your fingertip and dab it onto lips for a subtle stain.
Skip Bold Eyes and Bold Lips
If you do take the preceding advice (a dramatic lip), be sure to downplay your eyes and cheeks (unless sequins, fishnets and high kicks are part of your job description).
Try No-Makeup Makeup
The trick to getting flawless-looking skin is using your products strategically (and sparingly). Instead of spackling on a heavy layer of foundation, use concealer around the corners of your nose, down the sides of your mouth, under your eyes and on your chin to camouflage redness and shadows. If you need more coverage, apply a tinted moisturizer over that. And for the dewy finish that models had at Stella McCartney (at left), add a shimmery highlighter (like
Nars The Multiple) to the tops of cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose and above the center of your lips.
