9 Fashion Trends to Look Out for This Season
There are certain items—like a cozy sweater—that carry so much autumnal utility, they'll never fall out of fashion. Think: buttery cashmere, shaggy mohair and snuggly wool. Lindsey Smecker, CEO of trend forecasting agency ESP Trendlab, says you'll see a "return of glamour with embellished knitwear with sequins, pearls, crystals, or feather details."
"Loafers, Mary-Janes and Oxfords are all back on the runways," writes Aemilia Madden for Harper's Bazaar. A crisp white tee and wide-leg jeans will emphasize the casual side of these boarding school favorites. With cuffed shorts and a cashmere sweater, you'll be the epitome of polished.
Dial up the cool factor by pairing a cropped leather jacket with a pleated skirt for a bit of punk-meets-prep—a hybridized aesthetic you'll be seeing all over this fall. Or, opt for a long, '90s-inspired leather jacket to play with another one of the season's trends: maxi-lengths!
"Ultimately, the trench coat is the one thing that comes to my mind when thinking about in-between-season shopping," says Miriam Nehring, senior affiliate editor for Vogue Germany. Luckily, the fall collections have re-imagined the classic trench with an array of head-turning details. Think: oversized collars, belts and pockets—not to mention delicious hues, like this orange sherbet example.
Marci Hirshleifer, the global personal shopping director at Hirshleifers, suggests easing into this season's menswear-inspired trend with a boyish, square-cut blazer. Opting for a brilliant hue or a funky print will help bring a more playful, less corporate, energy to the look.
The tailored button-down checks off so many of this season's top fashion trends: It's preppy. It's inspired by menswear. It's a timeless wardrobe essential. Pair it with a miniskirt and over-the-knee boots, or play with an edgier style by layering it with a black corset.
Hyper-feminine jewelry and a funky print will go a long way in loosening-up this season's obsession with crisp tailoring. Take Exhibit A, for example: bodacious hoop earrings and a floral-print silk tie bring a breath of fresh air to this dark wool overcoat. Whatever you do: "Have fun and make it young," says image and style strategist Jazmine Motley-Maddox.
Ciarra Lorren Zatorski, associate fashion editor for Vogue, is excited to reintroduce the bomber jacket into her wardrobe. "However this coming season, no crops," she says. "We're thinking oversized!" Pass over the usual brown, black or olive shades for a saturated color that pops, like this lilac stunner.
Wide-leg jeans? They're about to get even wider this season. "After spending many of my teenage years in extra-skinny jeans, I'm finding relief in the breezy, easy silhouettes," says fashion and style writer Christian Allaire. Lean into the skater boy vibe by pairing them with graphic tees or equally oversized button-ups.
