Dear Damone, I am what one would call a beauty junkie. I read every beauty magazine from cover to cover and have tried every beauty product known to woman. However, as of late, I have become very frustrated about beauty myths. Everyone seems to have different opinions about what really works. I have followed your career for years and would like to know which are legit and which are old wives' tales? Any light you can shed on this subject will be greatly appreciated.

— Sara May, St. Paul, Minnesota

Dearest Sara, I agree that there is a lot of information floating around out there that has no validity to back it up. I used my experience as a top makeup artist, while also doing some serious research, to find out once and for all what has been proven versus what has been made up. I dissected 10 major beauty myths, and I think you're going to be surprised by some of the answers!

Myth: Tweezing is better than wax for eyebrows. This makes the skin around the eyes less likely to sag.

Fact:
False! Unfortunately, if the skin around your eyes is going to sag, there is not much one can do to alter it that does not involve cosmetic surgery. If this were true, then the tweezing (which involves constant pulling) would actually loosen the skin more than the wax, which is one quick pulling motion.

Myth: Natural products are better for your skin than artificial ones.

Fact: False! Some natural skin products, such as cleansers and moisturizers actually work really well. However, when it comes to results, nothing works better than retinol and glycolic acids.

Myth: Misting your face with water during a long flight is a good way to moisturize.

Fact: False! Misting your face with water actually dries out your skin after the water evaporates. Find a spritzer that contains glycerin or aloe vera to lock in the moisture.

Myth: Waxing the hair off my lip will make it grow back thicker.

Fact: False! Hair that has not been cut grows to a point. It is widest at the base and most narrow at the tip. When you shave or wax, the base grows out, which can make it appear that the hair is thicker. The truth of the matter is it never grows back heavier than it was in the first place.

Myth: Chocolate causes acne.

Fact: False! Hormones, overactive oil glands, heredity and dead skin cells that lodge in skin pores are what cause acne. A poor diet, however, can exacerbate skin conditions.

Myth: Wearing nail polish all the time turns nails yellow.

Fact: True! Nail polish contains pigment, which can stain the nails, especially the darker tones. One way to avoid this is by applying a clear base coat before you apply color to act as a barrier.

Myth: You should never tweeze above the brow.

Fact: False! Sometimes to achieve the proper eyebrow shape for your face, it is absolutely necessary to tweeze above the brow. This can get a little complicated when doing your own, so seek a professional to find out what is the correct shape for you personally.

Myth: Certain skin products can shrink my pores.

Fact: False! It is impossible to change the size of your pores, but you can make them appear smaller. Different products can tighten the skin, which gives the illusion that the pores have diminished. However, it is only temporary.

Myth: Concealer should be applied before foundation.

Fact: False! Concealer should be one to two shades brighter than your foundation to brighten up the undereye area, while blending into the foundation. This step is best achieved by applying the concealer on top of the foundation.

Myth: The best way to grow out your hair is to get it cut on a regular basis.

Fact: False! The amount of times you cut your hair will not alter your normal biologically determined growth pattern. It is true that by cutting the hair, the overall texture can appear healthier as you grow out the hair to achieve a longer length.
