zone coats

Ladies, I know it's cold—but that doesn't mean you need to look like Frosty the Snow Woman. I'm blown away by these Preta Lobue jackets, which come in three temperature-specific "zones" (and several colors per zone): Zone 1 for mid-50s to high 60s, Zone 2 for low 40s to mid-50s, and Zone 3 for 30s and below. Their sleek, down-alternative insulation, nipped-in waists, and architectural collars offset the puff factor. And yes, they're an investment, but quality construction ensures they'll look great for many winters to come. (Zone 1 jacket, $295; Zone 2 jacket, $550; Zone 3 jacket, $595; all Preta Lobue, saks.com; neimanmarcus.com)

I didn't have high hopes for this coat. Horizontal quilting—actually, horizontal anything—isn't usually slimming. But it made every person on our fashion team look fantastic. Side seams carve out a waist, it's long enough to cover your tush, and its grayish Weimaraner shade flatters everyone. ($99, uniqlo.com)

Lined with battery-powered heat panels to keep you toasty for hours, this jacket charges like a PDA. ($850; columbia.com)

Would you believe this jacket is...water repellent?...recyclable?...made by Patagonia? It surprised me, too! But this faux-fur number is as practical as it is glamorous: A hidden front zipper and snap closure block chilling winds, while a swingy silhouette makes the jacket so Marilyn Monroe. Wear it over a blouse and pencil skirt for the office (it also comes in taupe and gray) or a cocktail dress for a winter's night out. ($149; patagonia.com)
