In July 2014, Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted into the National Football League, flew to Los Angeles for a big honor days before reporting for training camp with the St. Louis Rams. Michael was chosen to receive the 2014 Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs. By his side was longtime boyfriend Vito Cammisano. "When I got to LA for the ESPYs, I was extremely excited. I'd never been to any award show to that level," Vito says. "I was just extremely honored that Mikey wanted me to go with him and be with him during that experience in his life."
While the two enjoyed some downtime, seen in the video above, it wasn't all glitz and glamor. Watch as Michael works to understand every aspect of the St. Louis playbook to prepare for camp.
