The Bible Verse That Changed Stephen Colbert's Life

Late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert, a practicing Roman Catholic, shares the Bible verse that changed his life as a young man, during a time when, he says, he had lost his faith. He tells Oprah that he had been walking in Chicago on a cold day when he was handed a Bible on the street. The pages had frozen shut, but when he did manage to get it open, he happened to open it to a particularly powerful passage in Matthew.

"I understood the phrase 'It spoke to me,'" Stephen says, thinking back on that day. "Because I wasn't reading it; it just spoke off the page. And the words of Christ are that for me. The words of Christ speak off the page. There's no effort for me to read them."
