Why Sheryl Sandberg Traded the Golden Rule for the Platinum Rule

Season 8 Episode 806
CC
When Facebook COO and best-selling author Sheryl Sandberg lost her husband to a tragic accident in 2015, she suddenly found herself confronting a level of grief unlike anything she had ever experienced. Her emotional struggle in the wake of her husband's death led her to write her latest book, Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy, which is meant to serve as a guide for those facing challenging times and those looking to support them.

In the book, Sheryl explains that although she had always followed the age-old Golden Rule—do unto others as you would have them do unto you—it was the "Platinum Rule" that helped her most during her bereavement. "I realized we don't know what people who are really going through something we've never experienced want," Sheryl says. "The Platinum Rule is 'Do what they want.'"
