Glennon Doyle Melton: "The World Wants Girls to Be Pretty and Small and Quiet"

Season 7 Episode 714
Aired on 09/11/2016 | CC
Successful blogger and best-selling author Glennon Doyle Melton wants every woman to shout their truth from the mountaintops. She believes sharing the truth of our lives—the good, the bad and the ugly—is the key to spiritual growth. Glennon calls her new book, Love Warrior, the biggest, loudest, wildest and truest thing she's ever put out into the world.

Still, it took Glennon years to find her voice. At the early age of 10, she realized that she was expected to be "pretty and small and quiet" in order to be liked. In her book, she writes: "I begin to understand that beauty warms people and smart cools people. I also understand that being loved for beauty is a tenuous situation for a girl."

Gradually, Glennon says, she began to find that there's something problematic in the way society views women who speak their minds. After all, she says, success doesn't come to those women who are constrained by such oppressive standards. "How can you be a successful girl if the purpose of being human and growing is to grow and to find your voice?" she says. "So it's a setup. Right?"
